Guide to unlock the power of your Throat Chakra

Your chakras, or energy centers, govern the flow of energy within your body. There are seven main chakras in the body, which begin at the base of the spine and move upward to the tops of your head.

These energy centers, which you cannot see with the naked eye, also correspond to the body's major organs. When you feel out of sorts in any of the seven main chakras areas, you will likely be able to correlate it back to an energy imbalance.

The throat chakra, or Visuddha, is located behind the throat, center to our shoulders (find other chakra article: Root Chakra, Sacral Chakra, Solar Plexus Chakra, Heart Chakra).

When the throat chakra is in balance, we can express our truth with authentic and kind compassion and are confident in who and what we are. When open and clear, our creativity is strong, and our communication on point.

When out of balance, one may find that they struggle with expressing their thoughts and feelings, may be fearful of speaking their truth, or to the contrary may nervously talk and share too much, or speak with a harsh tongue.

The mantra for the throat chakra is "I speak". Do you find yourself second-guessing what to say in conversation, possibly even telling little white lies to 'fit in'? Do you avoid speaking your truth out of fear of being misunderstood? At times, do you struggle to be honest with the single most important person, yourself? If so, your throat chakra may need your care and examination because our voice is essential. The world is not the same without it.

The physicality of your throat chakra out of balance can manifest as a raspy, dry, sore throat, or even a complete loss of your voice (laryngitis). I suffered from repeat bouts of strep throat until I began to speak my truth confidently and lovingly. I have not had a sore throat since.

Self-Care Tips

If your throat chakra is out of alignment, try and incorporate a few of these practices into your life.

-Practice putting your vocal cords to good use through humming, singing, and chanting. These practices will assist in moving stuck and stagnant energy.

-Let your inner child out to play and be creative more often. Make time to do the things you love, whether painting, crocheting, gardening, or flower arranging. The more you can get in touch with yourself and what you love, the easier it will be to communicate with others.

-Allow yourself to share your feelings, thoughts, and ideas more often. Begin with a journal to discover what you have to say and learn what is important to you. Once you have a solid understanding of your truth, practice telling others when the opportunity presents itself. Be sure to listen as well.

These tools and practices will help keep your throat chakra clear and open, allowing you to confidently and compassionately speak your truth.
