7 Essential Oil Blends to Balance Chakras

What are Chakras?

At one point in time, you have probably heard someone say that you need to “open your chakras”, but what does that actually mean? Originating in India around 1500 BC, chakras have been regarded as the energy centers of your body. Spiritual teachings often stated that opening the chakras are essential to reaching peace and transcendence (1). Today, the chakras are usually referred to during yoga or meditation classes, as they play a crucial role in establishing energy flow and self-awareness. There are seven chakras that are directly related to various regions of the body and impact different emotions and feelings. Each plays a unique yet significant role in our ability to be liberated and healthy. Often we are drawn to the color of the chakra we need to balance. If you feel like wearing a lot of red, your root chakra might be out of balance.

If the chakras are “opened” or “unblocked”, they indicate alignment throughout your mind, body and soul. The word “chakra” actually translates to “wheel” in sanskrit, and so we can imagine that these seven main chakras are the spools of a wheel all working together to maintain inner balance and harmony.

Essential Oils for the 7 Chakras

Root Chakra (Muladhara) - “I Am”

Similar to the roots of a tree, the root chakra is crucial to keeping us as individuals “grounded”. It is the first chakra to develop, forming around ages 1-7. Located at the base of our spine, this chakra is important to maintaining feelings of security and confidence amidst challenging situations. If you feel fearful, insecure, or uncertain of your purpose, it is very likely that your root chakra is blocked.

Since the root chakra is regarded as the foundation of our body, it must be balanced before any and all other chakras can be opened. Essential oils such as Black Pepper, Ravintsara and Eucalyptus in our Breathe blend are designed to open your root chakra and bring back feelings of safety and security, as these earthy aromas stimulate our bodies’ vital life forces. Utilizing these essential oils not only helps us to build a strong foundation in our root chakra, but it also allows us to pursue complete balance in all seven of our chakras.

Sacral Chakra (Swadhisthana) - “I Feel”

The sacral chakra, located just below the belly button, is connected to our feelings of creativity, positivity, and sexuality. It helps us to understand our emotions and the emotions of others. If this chakra is unbalanced, then we may feel a sense of withdrawal or lack of control. This can also influence our interactions with those around us, as an unbalanced sacral chakra can lead to a fear of intimacy and an inability to be vulnerable.

Essential oils that can help to rebalance the sacral chakra are  Sweet Orange, Mandarin and Bergamot. We have formulated our Sunshine blend with these oils to influence creativity, emotions and sensations. These scents help uplift the sacral chakra because they are harmonizing and clarifying, thus calming agitation and reigniting our emotions. Implementing these essential oils into your aromatherapy routine can help to regain a positive outlook and inspire more creative problem solving.

Solar Plexus Chakra (Manipura) - “I Do”

If you have ever felt the sensations of “butterflies in your stomach” or a “pit in your stomach”, that is the solar plexus chakra at work. The solar plexus chakra is located in the stomach and upper abdomen area and is crucial to maintaining a healthy sense of identity. Imbalances of this chakra can vary from low self-esteem to healthy self confidence to even arrogant behavior.

Imbalances in the solar plexus chakra cause feelings of self-doubt and can lead us to feel powerless in our own abilities. Luckily for us, there are many varieties of essential oils that connect deeply with our solar plexus chakra. Our Muscle Ease blend contains Ginger, Juniper, Helichrysum, and Myrrh, which produce anti-inflammatory and healing effects to calm our muscles, metabolism and nervous system. Additionally, these scents can also help to alleviate ailments in the stomach region of the solar plexus, including nausea and other digestive issues.

Heart Chakra (Anahata) - “I Love”

You guessed it, the heart chakra is located in the center of the chest and connects to our feelings of love. Love is the foundation of many of our relationships, whether it’s with our best friends, family members or with that special someone. Not only does the heart chakra enable us to give and receive love, but it also helps us to cope with heartbreak. The heart chakra is the bridge between our upper and lower chakras, which represents a connection between earthly matters and higher spiritual experiences.

An imbalance in the heart chakra may come from a recent breakup, death, or abandonment, which often evoke feelings of loneliness, jealousy, grief and even depression. By using essential oils such as Frankincense, Lavender and Ylang Ylang in our De-Stress essential oil blend, we can reclaim the ability to love and be loved. These particular essential oils work so well in coordination with the heart chakra because they are familiar scents. These oils alleviate emotional distress and heal feelings of anger or despair. By using these essential oils to fully open our heart chakra, we can experience deeper compassion, empathy and love.

Throat Chakra (Vishuddha) - “I Talk”

When completely balanced and fully functioning, our throat chakra gives voice to our inner selves and allows us to clearly express our thoughts, feelings, and beliefs. If you have ever felt like you couldn’t find the right words to communicate what you were feeling inside, then you most likely had an imbalance in your throat chakra.

In order to recenter the throat chakra and improve our communication with others, we recommend you try out the essential oils of Cardamom and Geranium in our Detox Blend.  By dispelling the toxins from our thyroid glands, we are able to open the 5th chakra also known as the "bottleneck" of the energy body. This essential oil is perfect to stimulate the glands and encourage more expression if you find yourself lacking the energy or ability to speak up.

Third Eye Chakra (Ajna) - “I See”

Located between the eyes, the third eye chakra is regarded as the “eye of the soul”. The third eye chakra relates to ideas deeper than what can be seen to the naked eye, as it is connected to our memories, imagination, wisdom and dreams. When in proper alignment, it allows us to see the big picture and follow our intuition. Physical manifestations of an imbalance in our third eye chakra include headaches, issues with concentration, and hearing problems. If our third eye chakra is blocked, we may appear oblivious or out of touch with reality.

Balancing our third eye chakra can be supported through the use of essential oils in our Headache blend, which is crafted with Peppermint and Lavender. The properties of these essential oils reduce mental fogginess and increase concentration. This blend of essential oils will help to open your third eye chakra in order to focus your thoughts and awaken your brain.

Crown Chakra (Sahasrara) - “I Understand”

The final chakra, the crown chakra, sits at the crown of our heads and radiates energy upwards. The crown chakra guides us in acknowledging our inner and outer beauty, as well forming a deeper spiritual connection. This chakra is highly associated with the hypothalamus, pituitary gland and endocrine system to influence our consciousness. This is the final chakra to develop and is directly connected to the other six chakras. If the crown chakra is in balance, it can also help to support the other chakras, cultivating more bliss and happiness in ourselves.

Signs that the crown chakra is blocked include close-mindedness, lacking spiritual purpose, or feeling alone in the universe. Palmarosa, Ylang Ylang, and Sandalwood in our amazing Sleep blend is designed for opening the crown chakra. This is because of their calming, sedative properties that can soothe restlessness and relax the mind. These scents have been used for centuries in meditation and spiritual practices to influence our spiritual will, inspiration and guidance in the universe.

Chakras and Mental Health

In addition to their presence in historical practices, being mindful of our chakras can also be beneficial for maintaining positive mental health and overall holistic well-being. According to research by Philippa Sue Richardson, who possesses a doctorate in Metaphysical Sciences, an imbalance of the chakras can create instability in our mood, mental stability and psychological well-being (2). Let’s face it, all of us have an experience with mental illness, whether we have seen someone we love struggle or have battled it ourselves. However, it is important not to hide in fear or shy away from mental health issues, but instead to take action to heal our minds and bodies.

Essential Oils can Restore Balance

In order to combat these imbalances, Richardson emphasizes the use of aromatherapy and essential oils to achieve optimal health and balance in our chakras. Essential oils are an excellent way to restore balance in the chakras because they have such a potent, effective impact. This is because our sense of smell can ignite strong, meaningful messages in our brain and can greatly influence our moods and activity. We have all experienced this. For me, the slightest hint of lavender reminds me of my grandmother (lavender was her favorite scent), this smell brings about fond memories and feelings from my time spent with her. I invite you to think of a scent that evokes happy, joyful memories for you!

It is also important to note that since each of the seven chakras have different locations, purposes, and meanings, there are different essential oils for each as well. We believe in helping others achieve a holistic, healthy and natural lifestyle. Even our packaging incorporates layers of meaning from chakra colors to healing affirmations. This is why we have researched the significance of each chakra and implemented that knowledge into the construction of each blend we create. By understanding each chakra and the proper essential oils, we are able to move towards a more balanced, healthier, and happier version of ourselves.
