Essential Oils and Pregnancy
It is best to avoid using any products that are scented with artificial or synthetic ingredients during the first trimester of pregnancy. If women are experiencing morning sickness, slight depression, sleep issues or other minor discomforts after the first trimester, essential oils are a gentle way to alleviate these uneasy sensations without concern if diluted properly (1-2%) or inhaled.
We recommend inhaling our blends instead of rolling them onto the skin, as they are diluted to a 5% concentration in organic jojoba oil. Pregnant women can still get the same effect from inhaling the blends, yet this method is milder on the system. For common pregnancy concerns, try the following blends:
- Muscle Ease for any lower back pain.
- Calm for anxiousness.
- De-Stress for depression.
- Breathe for travel or exposure to germs.
There are some essential oils that have been noted to have contraindications with pregnancy. The only essential oils that we use in our blends that are on this list are Peppermint and Rosemary, due to their stimulating effects. Although we made it a point to make certain that these oils fall within safe concentrations for pregnant women, it is still recommended to avoid the following blends during the first trimester:
- Invigorate
- Headache
- Focus
It is also important to note that until the baby is 1 month old, it is better to avoid topical application of essential oils. It is best not to expose the baby to either artificial or natural scents, as they should learn to smell their parents’ natural scent, rather than be bombarded with extra sensory overload during this fragile phase of development. Once they are past a month old, it is best to proceed with caution and only topically use, at most, a 1% dilution for particular concerns.
Essential oils provide a natural way to treat some of the physical and emotional discomforts of pregnancy, but remember that less is more when it comes to using any additional supplements during this delicate time.
