A Mindful Morning

“The world belongs to the energetic” -Ralph Waldo Emerson

For those of you who face each day with an “early bird catches the worm” attitude, give yourselves a big pat on the back. But let’s face it, most of us are not morning people. I have personally struggled with waking up refreshed and starting my mornings off right. However, I have found that a change in mindset and goal setting first thing in the morning can work wonders.

We can improve our morning stress by setting conscious, purposeful goals for our day. Meditation and daily affirmations are wonderful ways to center ourselves first thing in the morning and set our expectations for the rest of the day. Research shows that your expectations of how stressful your day will be can impact your activity and energy for the rest of the day (1). So by adjusting these “anticipatory processes”, we can improve our cognitive functioning for the day ahead. We recommend using our Sunshine blend in a diffuser for morning meditations and waking up. It is formulated with an uplifting blend of Sweet Orange, Mandarin and Bergamot to brighten and add rays of optimism to your day. A 2014 research study indicated that patients treated with aromatherapy using bergamot oil reported a 100% success rate of uplifted mood and less depression (4). Bergamot and other mood-boosting essential oils work by regulating the hormones in our endocrine system, which can increase our serotonin levels (the hormone that makes us happy!) (5). Combining the uplifting power of essential oils with daily affirmations can bring a new ray of positivity to each day.

Breakfast is the Most Important Meal of the Day

With a consistent wake up time and our daily intentions set, we can now properly fuel our body. As we have all heard before, breakfast is the most important meal of the day. For an even better breakfast experience, we love using our Detox blend of Cardamom and Geranium, which expel any leftover toxins and soothe an upset stomach. Our Geranium oil is sourced from farms in Egypt, which produces a potent oil that is known for its therapeutic effects on the lymphatic system. This floral oil’s benefits include reducing water retention and restoring hormone balance to our bodies (11). Cardamom is a stimulating, spicy aroma that promotes digestive health using bioactive compounds to prevent acid reflux, heartburn, stomach cramps, and diarrhea (12). Using this blend with our pre-breakfast trip to the bathroom can help to cleanse our digestive systems and promote healthy bowel movements. With this blend, you can be sure to jump-start your day feeling refreshed and ready to fuel your body with a healthy, delicious breakfast!

Dare to Make the Most Day

“We are what we think. All that we are arises with our thoughts. With our thoughts, we make the world” -Buddha

I don’t know about you but for me, the midday blues are real. Whether it’s the effects of our morning coffee wearing off or the onset of fatigue from hours of work, the afternoon slump is a part of most of our days. But when I found this quote from Buddha, I realized that there are many things we can do to take control of our midday tiredness. I love thinking about this especially when I am losing focus at work or school. I also try to think back to the intentions I set during my morning meditation, because they remind me what I need to be doing and why. Even when you feel discouraged, unmotivated, or just plain tired, it is incredibly important to understand that our minds and bodies are more resilient than we think.

The midday slump is also the perfect time to reach for your essential oils for that extra boost. Our Focus blend of frankincense, rosemary, and peppermint can be used at any time of the day when you need an extra jump-start to your day. Frankincense has been shown in research to increase the amount of synaptic connections in our hippocampus, leading to improved learning and memory capabilities (6). In a publication from the International Journal of Neuroscience, people exposed to aromatherapy using rosemary experienced higher brain function shown through less fatigue, higher alertness, and faster and more accurate completion of math computations (7). Northeastern University published an article stating the benefits of peppermint oil in regards to the brain’s hippocampus, which is our center of memory, learning, and cognitive function. In this study, peppermint oil showed a direct correlation to stronger signals in brain neurons, causing enhanced learning and faster memory retrieval (8). Essential oils can greatly improve work performance, and they are perfect to keep near our workstation to keep us focused, enhance our learning and improve cognitive functioning.

Relax and Reward Yourself at Dinner

Dinner time is often when we are excited to try new recipes or indulge in some of our favorite foods. This is the part of our day where we get to unwind and sit down with our families. Dinner is also a reward for us for making it through another day. While I most definitely believe in the occasional takeout or chocolate fudge brownie indulgence, I have found that eating the right foods on a regular basis keeps me from falling into too many food comas. If you have also struggled with the temptation of too much indulgence at dinner, our Abstain blend is a perfect solution. It is crafted with the essential oils of Organic Citrus Peel and Juniper, which help to control cravings and alleviate appetite. This is a blend that you can use at any time of the day, but I have found that dinner time is when it is most useful for curbing those end of the day cravings. Both Citrul Peel and Juniper essential oils are packed full of antioxidants that reduce inflammation and bloating. The International Journal of Medical Sciences has stated that citrus peel also contains brilliant antispasmodic properties, which can relax the muscles in our stomachs to promote a healthier digestive system (9). Juniper berry contains powerful nutrient composition has been shown to reduce inflammation in the dermis, making it great for treating conditions such as bloating or edema (10). It is also great to help with those midnight snack cravings that we all inevitably have.

A Peaceful Night

“Sleep is the best Meditation” - Dalai Lama XIV

Ah finally! After a long day, we all look forward to jumping into bed and finally getting some much needed sleep. However sometimes, that isn’t as easy as it seems. Many struggle with issues such as insomnia, restlessness and insufficient hours of sleep. But getting a true good night’s sleep is not out of reach. Our Sleep blend of Ylang Ylang, Sandalwood, and Palmarosa is made to diminish anxiety and encourage peace at over a 90% chance of effectiveness (3). Another great aspect about our Sleep blend is that it is offered in a variety of forms, from room mists to diffusing oils to body lotions and of course, in a roll-on, this essential oils blend can truly calm your mind and prepare you for the much needed rest you deserve. Remind yourself with affirmations that you have worked hard for the day and you are worthy of a calm, peaceful, and refreshing night.

Peppermint will slap you back into high gear faster than you can say “mood booster.” It’s like having your very own motivational coach in a bottle.
