The Right Way to Clean Your Face with Oil

Clean face oils sound like a contradiction. After all, most people have grown-up with all kinds of misleading cliches and stereotype warnings about greasy, oily skin. So, clean face oils and oil cleansing seem to be contrary to what most people assume about oil on the skin.

Research done by dermatologists and skin care specialists now confirm various important benefits of particularly clean face oils. Oil cleanser in skin care products are now mainstream, and people have turned to oil cleansing to gently remove makeup, soothe sensitive skin, and reduce breakouts.

Clean face oils lift excess sebum, the oily substance produced by glands on the skin. Clean face oils clean-out clogged pores like blackheads and whiteheads, remove dead skin, pollutants, and makeup.

It’s why many makeup removers include clean face oils.

The right way to clean the skin with clean face oils starts with the apples/oranges distinction that there's a huge difference between applying a cosmetically formulated clean face oil and rubbing kitchen canola on to the skin.

How to apply face oil? Expert consensus is that patting is more effective than rubbing. It's important to apply clean face oils, especially based on your skin type. Skin care experts caution about using too much. Oils spread very easily, so only a few drops are needed to do the trick.

One of the most effective techniques is, in the shower or at the bathroom sink, pouring about a quarter size amount of the clean face oil into the hand, massaging it into the skin of the face (do NOT wet the skin, first,) and using smooth circular strokes, massage-in the clean face oil for at least a minute, maybe two, until the clean face oil has saturated the skin. The technique also removes make-up, so there is no need to remove make-up, first. It’s optional to leave the clean face oil on the skin for up to 10 minutes, to really deep clean pores.

Then soaking a clean washcloth with a very hot tap or shower water and quickly wringing it out, opening it and placing it over the face. This creates steam against the skin, to remove the oils and any impurities in the skin. There will still be a thin layer of clean face oil on the skin, but it is beneficial.

The experts agree. Clean face oils can be applied to the face on top of a moisturizer, to seal in hydration, or directly onto the skin as a base for the moisturizer. Adding a few drops to clean, damp skin and gently patting the product into the face also works well.
